Romboleden is not only Norway's oldest pilgrim path, it is also an important connection between two great Nordic saints: St. Olav and the Swedish Saint Birgitta.

An old road from Sweden to Norway

Follow in the footsteps of pilgrims and tradesmen crossing the national border in Skarddøra, along the shiny surface of the lake Selbu and through the forests of Malvik to Trondheim. Romboleden can certainly be said to be an old road for pilgrims, traders and officials who for centuries have been trading and exchanging culture between Norway and Sweden.

In Skarddøra, on the Swedish border, two old pilgrim paths meet up; the great Romboleden and the Jämt-Norway route. From here, via Stugudalen, and down through Tydalen and Neadalen towards Selbu, the path goes through fantastic areas with beautiful views of the mountain masses such as Sylan, Skardsfjella, Skarvan, Fongen, Bringen and Rensfjellet.

A wonderful nature experience

Towards Selbu you will experience varying scenery, from open mountains, lush forest landscape to fertile agricultural landscape. You will pass Selbu church, which probably has had a central impact on the medieval pilgrims. The road to the pilgrim destination goes via the forests of Malvik, to the Saksvikkorsen overlooking the spire of Nidaros Cathedral.

How to do a pilgrimage on the Romboleden?

Romboleden is characterized by its varied landscape, from scanty mountains and ridges at 1000 meters above sea level, to lush coastal climate at the Trondheim fjord. Most of the pilgrim path goes in the mountains and woods. Through the unspoilt mountain areas on the Swedish side, tents are the only accommodation option. Other parts of the trail offer hostels, campsites and hotels. Romboleden is not very well marked, so this pilgrim path is best suited for pilgrims who are skilled in the use of map and compass.
