A walk through agricultural landscapes, islands, forests and towns

Day 1

The first stage of Tunsbergleden starts in the charming coastal town of Larvik. The trail takes you through historic coastal landscapes, forest areas, and fields in an area that steeped in pre-christian and medieval history. You will pass through the first Norwegian viking town, Kaupang, then the mysterious stone setting Istrehågan before entering the city of Sandefjord. Sandefjord is known for its history with whaling industry, as well as the "Gokstad Ship" - one of the best preserved viking ship in the world, that was found just outside the city.

Day 2

Not far after Sandefjord, the charming ferry Mf Jutøya will take you to Veierland, an idyllic car-free island that has a population of about 150 all year round residents. From the other side of the island, the ferry will take you over to another island called Nøtterøy, where you will be walking along forest lanes and residential areas before entering what is known as the oldest city in Norway; Tønsberg. Here, there is much to explore, including a branch of Pilgrim Center Oslo, that is open whenever there are people in the building.

Day 3

Moving on, you will walk through beautiful forest areas before arriving in the charming town of Åsgårdstrand, where the famous painter Edvard Munch once lived. Then, after having walked through lush softwood forest along the coast you will finally arrive at Borre - home to the majestic Borrehaugene, a group of large burial mounds from the viking age, as well as Borre Church, one of the most impressive medieval churches in the country.
