Grønn = Enkel

Blå = Middels

Rød = Krevende

Svart = Ekstra krevende

Arrival at the starting point Lutnes

Getting to the starting point Lutnes can be demanding. An alternative is to start the journey from Trysil, which is a better traffic hub.

Nearest airport: Scandinavian Mountains Airport (A day's hike from Lutnes)

Bus and Train: Vy.no

Accommodation

Dagfinnstua at Oddheim

Day 1: (13 km) Lutnes - Plassen

The first day of the trip starts with a shorter leg between Lutnes and Plassen. Nevertheless, the trail takes off from the river valley and over Hammaråsen and Grønnberget. The stage will therefore be somewhat demanding as you have to climb approx. 170 meters in height from the starting point in Lutnes to Hammaråsen and then another 70 meters in height up to Grønnberget.

Visit the store: "Nærbutikken" in Plassen

Accommodation

Day 2: (20km) Plassen - Nybergsund

Day two is a flatter stage where the trail largely runs parallel to the main road on side roads. It is recommended to spend the night at one of the accommodations where the trail passes within Nybergsund, thereby shortening the day's stage somewhat. If you are fit, you can extend the stage an extra 7km past Nybergsund to reach the municipal centre of Trysil.

Accommodation

Day 3: (7km) Nybergsund - Trysil

Day three is a shorter stage. Use the day as a rest day. Rest your legs and visit Trysil's sights and some shops and to stock up on the necessary provisions for the next few days. This is also the place for a extra rest day if needed.

Accommodation

Day 4: (18km) Trysil - Jordet

Today's stage starts with a steep climb up to Grimsåsen. At the top, people have climbed over 200 meters in height from the center of Trysil. After descending from Grimsåsen on the other side, the rest of the stage is relatively flat and follows the river valley up to Jordet. The surface alternates between asphalt and gravel roads.

Joker Jordet is the last grocery store before the hike across the mountains to Åkrestrømmen. Buy provisions for the next day's stages.

Accommodation

Day 5: (17 km) Jordet - Eltdalen

On day 5, the ascent into the mountain landscape begins. Today's highest point will be Slettvola at approx. 760 m. At the top, you have climbed 360 meters. The trail then descends to Eltdalen for the day's accommodation. On the way you pass a pleasant cabin by Nysledammen which you can also use.

Accommodation

Day 6: (26 km) Eltdalen – Osdalssjøen

Day 6 continues in rising mountain terrain. After about 12 km, the trail crosses the border to Rendalen municipality. The trail continues up to the highest point of the trip on the side of Ramundfjellet, 1050 m above sea level. After 18 km you arrive at Munkbetsetra. Munkbetsetra gets its name from the Middle Ages, when only pilgrims, who were often called monks, were allowed to graze their horses here. From Munkbetsetra, it is 8 km to Osdalsjøen in slightly hilly terrain without major climbs.

Accommodation

Day 7: (19 km) Osdalsjøen - Nordre Rensjøen

From birch forest by Osdalssjøen to pine forest towards Fjellkroken. The trail passes the river Osa over a bridge that leads into the Osdalen nature reserve, slightly ascending towards Gammelskarven at 906 m. Then varied landscape with forest and some marsh. From Østvollen (700 m above sea level) there is again rising terrain which gives a great view towards Sølenfjellet mountain.

Accommodation

Day 8: (11 km) Nordre Rensjøen - Åkrestrømmen

Cart road and trails in gently sloping terrain past Søljerøsta and Rosemarie's source, which was consecrated by Bishop Rosemarie Køhn in 1998. The last section follows the path of the river Mistra to the Åkrestrømmen.

Visit Joker Åsheim to top up your provisions. After the days in the mountains, it makes sense to have a rest day in the Åkerstrømmen.

Accommodation

Day 9: (10 km) Åkrestrømmen - Otnes

The day begins by crossing the river Rena. The trail then continues north along the road Moraveien to Åkre, a historic hub for pilgrim traffic. Here the Østerdalsleden from Trysil (eastern route) and Rena (western route) meet. At this historic crossroads stands the "The Pilgrim stone", a memory of the pilgrimage traffic in the Middle Ages with an inscribed "cross" and "ML" which can mean: "midway" or the year 1050. From Åkre you continue along the Moraveien, the old royal road, on to Otnes.

Accommodation

Day 10: (20 km) Otnes - Øvre Rendal

On day ten of the journey, the trail follows the Rena river along agricultural roads and partly motorways in easy terrain. On arrival in Øvre Rendal, you pass Rendalstunet. Country store, cafe and museum.

Shop for provisions for the next day's stages in the mountains at Coop Marked Øvre Rendal.

Accommodation:

Day 11: (19 km) Øvre Rendal - Skårsåsetra

Today's stage is very demanding as you carry a heavy rucksack full of provisions and must climb many meters of altitude and km. Fonnåsfjellet will be today's highest point at 909 meters above sea level. At the top, you have climbed 622 meters of altitude. Then you keep the altitude over to Skårsåssetra (800 m) for the day's accommodation.

Day 12: (12 km) Skårsåsetra - Søndre Kvanntjønna

Further over the mountain, the Østerdalsleden follows a cart road before it takes off on trails after Skarsjøen. The trail then goes past Ropartjørnan and on to Søndre Kvanntjønnan, which is the destination for today's stage.

Accommodation:

Day 13: (12 km) Søndre Kvanntjønna – Småvangan (Tylldalen)

Today's stage descends from the mountain towards Tylldalen bygdetun, before climbing up to Småvangan again.

Accommodation

Day 14: (13 km) Småvangan – Tynset

From Småvangan, there is a gradual descent to Tynset, which is the goal of this "recommended walks". In Tynset, you can easily jump on the train home, or continue on your way towards Trondheim (see: Tynset - Trondheim).

Accommodation:

Preparations | Recommended footwear

This hike is extra demanding. Pilgrims who choose to walk the Østerdalsleden must be well prepared both physically and in terms of equipment. General knowledge of maps and orientation is recommended. The journey goes through areas with poor mobile coverage, and you cannot therefore reliably rely on a digital map on a mobile phone. Purchasing paper maps for the mountain areas can be reasonable.

The Østerdalsleden trail moves over mountains and through deep forests on less prepared paths. The editor's recommendation for footwear would be marching boots that handle marshes and forests, as well as having softer soles for the longer stages on roads and dirt roads. Note that mountain shoes tend to have stiff soles, which can be difficult to use along roads. However, always choose well-worn footwear over new "optimal" footwear.
