St. Olavsleden starts in the town of Selånger, on the east coast of Sweden and ends at Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. The trail follows parts of the road that Saint Olav chose when he was on his way home from Russia in the summer of 1030 to recapture the Norwegian throne.

Selånger - Stiklestad - Trondheim

Difficulty: Easy, medium

Type of terrain: 45 per cent gravel road, 36 per cent paved road and 19 per cent on paths.

The trail is suitable for most people and can be walked in its entirety or divided into shorter stages. The many settlements along the trail make it easy to get to the desired starting point and it is easily accessible by train.

The trail is also well suited for those who want to cycle, especially on the Swedish side of the border. In Norway, some route adjustments must be made for the use of bicycles as a means of transport.

Large parts of the St. Olavsleden run through nature and cultural landscapes. In forest areas, along lakes, mountains and small settlements and historic sites. At Munkeby, a day hike from Stiklestad, the trail divides into an inner and an outer trail. Here you have to make a choice on whether you want to walk along the fjord or forest.

Pilgrims who choose the inner route are allowed to walk mostly on forest paths and gravel roads. There is a long way between the shops on the inner route and the pilgrims must either carry food or buy food in the simple hostels along the trail.

The outer part of St. Olavsleden runs through small towns and settlements by the Trondheim Fjord. Here the historical places are close. The outer trail runs mostly on asphalt and from Frosta / Tautra you are dependent on boat transport to Steinvikholmen or Trondheim.
