Visnes mining area

Situated along Kystpilegrimsleia
Ørjan Iversen
The copper used in the Statue of Liberty in New York comes from these mines!

Back in the day, Visnes was the largest and most modern copper plant in Northern Europe. The mine was active in two periods between 1865-1972, and during those periods, 4.2 million tonnes of copper, zinc and sulphur was extracted from the mines.

Vines copper plant invested in new technology early on. In 1875 they acquired drilling machines powered by compressed air, in 1880 they installed telephones (only four years after its invention!), and in 1885 Visnes got electric light in the mines, which meant that it was possible to work in the mines 24 hours a day.
