If you follow the path about 200 meters towards the coast, you’ll soon arrive at an impressive burial cairn. It is dated to the Bronze Age and is probably over 3000 years old! In Norway, the Bronze Age period dates from about 1700 BC to 500 BC, and is named after the transition from stone to bronze tools. The cairn at Vardås is a classic example of the burial practice in this period: the burials are often big and monumental, and situated on higher and clearly visible grounds. The burials are often found nearby prehistoric travel routes. Therefore, it’s not unlikely that the medieval pilgrims also visited the burial cairn at Vardås, on their way towards Nidaros.
