Church of Our Lady - One of the city's few remaining medieval churches

Trondheim's Church of Our Lady, a stone church built ca. 1200 A.D., is dedicated to The Virgin Mary. It has been rebuilt after several fires in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. The current shape took form in 1686 and the tower was built in the year 1742. The choir and eastern part of the nave are from the original medieval phase. On the outside eastern wall, an inscription is still visible. It reads:

HIN HELGHA MARIA À MIK – BIORN SIGNARSSON GER E MIK
(THE VIRGIN MARY OWNS ME - BJØRN SIGNARSSON MADE ME)

Bjørn was probably the original financier. These inscriptions are very rare in Norway.

The church is now an open church, thanks to voulunteer work provided by Kirkens Bymisjon.
