The hotel was established in 1648 and is one of the oldest in Norway. It is located at the edge of Krokskogen forest and has a shoreline along Steinsfjorden. Before the king's road was built in 1805, Sundvolden was a single hostel, but from 1848 the British-Norwegian businessman Thomas Bennet made it a very popular destination. Soon kings, emperors and other nobilities traveled to Sundvolden.
The hotel has a fitness center, spa with massage opportunities, and bicycle and canoe rentals. The family hotel has 520 beds in 272 rooms and is surrounded by a protected park with tall leafy trees and abundant bird life.
The hotel offers delicious home cooked food. The chef uses herbs from the herb garden, the butcher handles the meat skillfully, while the baker makes fresh bread for every meal.
