The hotel is one of Norway's oldest and was established in 1648. It is located at the foot of Krokskogen forest and has a shoreline along Steinsfjorden fjord. Before the king's road was built in 1805 Sundvolden was a single hostel, but from 1848 the British-Norwegian businessman Thomas Bennet made it a very popular destination. Soon kings, emperors and other nobilities all traveled to Sundvolden.

The hotel has a fitness center, spa with massage opportunities and bicycle and canoe rentals. The family hotel has 520 beds in 272 rooms and is surrounded by a protected park with tall leafy trees and abundant bird life.

The hotel offers delicious home cooked food. The chef adds flavor from the herb garden, the butcher handles the meat with care, while the baker makes fresh bread for every meal.
