Steinsodden is the northern border in Eastern Norway for reeds and duck food. Wet grazed salt meadows on calcareous soil are a rarity today and are certainly worthy of conservation. Outside Steinsodden is the most important nesting area for ducks and waders in Ringsaker. As of 1996, 130 bird species were observed in the area, including several rare species. Fossil-bearing shale layers and orthocercalk formed in the Earth's antiquity (Cambrosilur) are at the top here and can be easily studied.
