From here, the landscape opens up, and you can see the wide-open spaces are beautiful farmland as well as a large part of Lake Mjøsa.
It was important for the pilgrims to arrive here in the old times. Arriving from the dangers of the desolated forests to this wealthy church community that was called Skaun (The beautiful) in the middle ages. We need to remember that today’s perception of what’s beautiful nature only originates from the romantic period in the 1800s. Before the romantic period, forest and mountains was looked upon as ugly and dangerous.
