Medieval church from the 13th century

Skoger old church is a stone church from the 13th century. Most of the interior is from the 17th and 18th century, but some things also remains from when the church was built.

The altarpiece was bought in 1631 and is made of pine and oak and has several image surfaces. The top image shows God as an old man. The main image is of Jesus and the disciples around the table during the First Communion. The bottom picture shows Jesus on the cross, and below him is a drinking chalice into which his blood drips. There are large bright mountains behind him, and the sky is blue with pink clouds.

The gallery is decorated with paintings. The portraits of Jesus, the twelve disciples and King David were painted in 1652. In 1753 the gallery was extended, and then the painting of a jar of flowers and the portrait of St. Olav were added.

Perhaps the most unique thing in the interior are the three wooden figures in oak on the front wall. They are from the middle of the 13th century. The figure in the center is Christ with a crown of thorns hanging on the cross. On each side of him side Mary and John are depicted.

Skoger Church was hit by a lightning strike in 1748. The walls and most of the interior survived the strike, but the incident still caused major damage. The roof, tower and wooden furnishings had to be repaired.

The spring that can be found just below Skoger Old Church in the north-west is an Olavs spring. Legend has it that the water has special powers and that it can cure illness. Feel free to go down and look at the water, but we can not guarantee that the water is safe to drink.
