Since 1850, there has been considerable activity on the property Haverneset in Selbu, which today is Selbusjøen Hotell & Gjestegård. The property was originally developed for merchant Fredrik Birch from Trondheim, which in 1850 established Selbus`s first trading house with King Oscar's approval.
Birch was an entrepreneur and soon expanded the business with bakery, post office and production and sale of mill stones from a breach called Kvittyten at Kvernfjellvatna. The farm operation was also taken care of in an excellent way. Enlightened as he was, Birch became a pioneer. He was one of the first in central Norway to sow timothy and use fertilizer.
In 1898, his son Paul Birch took over. After a while he closed down the millstone operation. He ran the rest of the business until 1915, but then sold the property to Selbu Turberkuloseforening, which wanted to establish a tuberculosis sanatorium at Haverneset.
After the sanatorium was closed in 1955, the property was taken into use as a retirement home and health centre until 1987. At that time, the municipality had built a new health centre in the centre of Selbu, and the property was taken over by Toril and Arild Øien who established Selbusjøen Hotell and Gjestegård 1988.
Selbusjøen Hotell & Gjestegård AS is proud members of Historical Hotels & Restaurants. A membership that commits to quality and service.
