Rygge Church was built sometime in the second half of the 12th century. It is the only church in Østfold built with ashlars, which is finely dressed squared stones. The unique masonry technique also serves as the churches outer décor, as bricks with varying colours are placed deliberately. The church does not have a western tower, but studies of the brickwork have shown that a western tower was intended. A lot of the medieval interior are still present in the church today. Inside the church you can see two crucifixes from the 12th and 13th century as well as a chalk painting from the 14th century. Infants today are still being baptised in the same baptismal font as infants in the Middle Ages!
