Rokoberget

Situated along Gudbrandsdalsleden
Rokoberget has been a holy site since heathen times, and sacrifices were made here. After the rise of Christianity, a large number of churches were erected in Norway dedicated to the Archangel Michael

St. Michael is depicted as both fighter of evil and angel of mercy. There could be many reasons for a church of this kind being erected here. One of the reasons could be that the shortest route between Oslo and Trondheim passed through Løten and during the Catholic period, pilgrims spent the night at Rokoberget on their journey to Nidaros Cathedral. This has also been a place of pilgrimage with church services on certain days of the year, such as Michaelmas on 29 September. You can see traces of an old hill fort here. This is also the place where the villagers gathered for Midsummer’s Day celebrations and today, St Olav's Day mass is still held at the old church ruins. The path down to the right behind the bell tower leads to a nice viewpoint. From here you can see Rokosjøen lake, with Løtenbygda in the background, and all the way to Søndre Hedmarksvidda ridge. Eastwards, you can see Vesle Rokosjøen lake with its wetlands and further on to Glommadalføret. Rokoberget is also known for its rich flora. You can still find species such as quaking-grass, cowslip, basil thyme and small meadow rue.
