The Rissa-Landslide
On Saturday 29 April 1978, Rissa was hit by the largest quick clay landslide in Norway in the 20th century, when the hamlet of Fissa collapsed into the lake Botn. One person died in the landslide. Eight farms over 50 decares, seven farms under 50 decares, two residential properties, a cabin and a community house disappeared entirely or in part in the slide. In total, 32 people lost everything they owned in the landslide. 5 - 6 million cubic meters of clay slid out from an area of 330 acres, leaving a landslide edge of 1.5 kilometers. The landslide also caused major material damage to the town of Leira on the opposite side of Botnen, when a three-metre high tidal wave hit land shortly after the main landslide.
