Ringve museum was originally a farm once owned by Councillor Jan Wessel, father of Peter Wessel Tordenskjold. As Peter Wessel Tordenskjold's (1690-1720) childhood home a collection is dedicated to him and his contemporaries.

From the 1950s, the buildings were converted into a museum of music at the initiative of the Russian-born Victoria Backhe. Since 1952, about 2,000 instruments from all over the world have found their way to Ringve. The barn has been converted into a concert hall, and the main building houses, a unique collection of old musical instruments.

Ringve is one of the ancient residences at Lade in Trondheim, with buildings from the 18th, 19th and 20th century. The 32 acre botanical garden that surrounds the buildings makes it a very pleasant location.
