The two-metre high stone is dated to around 1040 and is one of the clearest signs of pilgrims in the region of Østerdalen. It has inscribed a cross and the letters ML, which can mean 1050 or "midleidis" i.e. midway. Both suggestions can be valid.

This was the junction for several roads in the Middle Ages. Here the pilgrims from the east from Sweden met those who came from the south along the road Moravegen from Oslo. Now the "The Pilgrim stone at Åkre" has once again become a junction for two branches of the Østerdalsleden, from Trysil and from Rena. From here they continue together towards Nidaros.

The Pilgrim's Stone at Åkre is Rendalen municipality's millennium site.
