The Pilgrim Stone at Åkre
Situated along Østerdalsleden
One of the clearest signs of pilgrims in Østerdalen from the Middle Ages
Distance
by the trail
The two meter tall boulder is dated to around 1040 and is one of the clearest signs of pilgrims in the region of Østerdalen. It has inscribed a cross and the letters ML, which can mean 1050 or "midleidis" i.e. midway. Both suggestions can be valid.
This was a junction for several roads in the Middle Ages. Here the pilgrims from the east from Sweden met those who came from the south along the road Moravegen from Oslo. Now "The Pilgrim stone at Åkre" has once again become a junction for two branches of the Østerdalsleden, one from Trysil and one from Rena. From here they join and continue towards Nidaros.
The Pilgrim's Stone at Åkre is Rendalen municipality's millennium site.
