St. Olav's Cross at Korsbrekka
Distance
When Olav was about to travel through Valldalen, he followed a path that today is called Olavsvegen, which leads up to Korsbrekka. Snorri writes that the king rested there and that he had two crosses erected. The tradition of the cross has been continued for almost a thousand years, and this is perhaps the most important historical memory of St. Olav in Valldal. There were two crosses here until the 13th century. In sources from 1743, only one cross is mentioned, and the priest Torsten Hoel writes that the farmers made sure that when one cross rotted and fell down, they erected a new one.
Hans Strøm was here around 1760 and writes: "Still seen here, on the right hand side when you go uphill, a quite simple wooden cross, standing about in the middle of the road, which bears the name of St. Ol's Cross, and is constantly (more according to old custom, than by superstition) maintained by the inhabitants."
In 1839, the people of Valldal erected a new cross, in the form of a menhir with an iron cross on top. It is this cross that can be seen here today. The trip up Korsbrekka to Olavkorset can be done in just under an hour. It is located just above Sylte village center.
