Meldal means "in the middle of the valley" and the name reflects its location in the middle of the Orkla valley. Notable landmarks include Vålåskaret, Norway's first preserved mountain hamlet, and the river Orkla, one of Norway's best salmon rivers. The Thamshavn Railroad, which was built to transport ore from the mines at Løkken Mine and down to the Trondheim fjord, is also worth a visit. The railroad is the world's oldest railway running on AC power and during the tourist season you can take the train in the exact same carriages as in 1908.

Orkla Industry Museum and the Old Mines at Løkken gives a good impression of the area's industrial history. As a concert hall the mine Fagerli is quite unique, with exceptionally fine acoustics. Further is Meldal Museum among the region's finest rural museums with its beautifully detailed interior.
