Meldal

Situated along Gudbrandsdalsleden
Meldal is a municipality in Sør-Trøndelag with approximately 4000 inhabitants

Meldal means "in the middle of the valley" and the name refers to its location in the middle of the Orkla Valley. Notable landmarks include Vålåskaret, Norway's first preserved mountain hamlet, and the river Orkla, one of Norway's best salmon rivers. The Thamshavn Railroad, which was built to transport ore from the mines at Løkken Mine and down to the Trondheim fjord, is also worth a visit. The railroad is the oldest railway in the world running on AC power and during the tourist season you can take the train in the old carriages from 1908.

Orkla Industry Museum and the Old Mines at Løkken gives an insight into the area's industrial history. The mine, Fagerli, is quite unique in the way that it has exceptional acoustics. It is sometimes used as a venue for music. Meldal Museum is among the region's finest rural museums with its beautifully detailed interior.
