The farm was settled during the early Iron Age (400-1 000). According to the name, the area might have been used as a cult site during the Viking Age. In Christian times there might have been a church at Hov. A church bell was found buried nearby. According to the legend it was buried to prevent beeing plundered by the Swedish army on it´s way to Hamar in 1567. The year 1040 is engraved in the bell, making it even more mysterious since the bell seems newer. 17 human skeletons were discovered next to yard. At Hov farm there are findings dating back to the Stone Age and upwards, including the church bell mentioned above.

The farms is also situated at the end of the 10 kilometres long «Tangen-eskeren»; a gravel ridge stretching from Romedal. This ridge is a result of the Ice age and a glacier river, which also created «Olavskilden» by rotating hard steones on the softer bedrock.
