The strongest of them is that these have been old thing sites, where the farmers have gathered to judge, to set laws and sort out social problems.

This is the reason why stone circles like this are often called "dommerringer" (court circles), and the theory that these places were old council places can be found everywhere in the country. The theory is supported by the fact that there is often an even number of stones in the circle. Even though it is a widely supported theory, there are still archeologist who disagree with it. There is also often burial grounds near the circles.
