The church dates back to the 12th century and is a three-naved Roman-style basilica constructed from limestone mined from the area.
It has been pillaged and damaged in fires multiple times and was close to being demolished in the mid-19th century. The church's facade was restored by the arcitects H.E. Schirmer and W. von Hanno in 1861, while the interior was restored from 1950 to 1955.
