  • Are there open churches along the pilgrims trail?

Not every church is open along the path, but if you are lucky you will meet someone with the key at the church. If you ask them to open the church for you, they are happy to help.

  • Where can I find good maps?

We have an overview map in paper format. In addition, you can browse our trail maps, printable in the trip planner, or by clicking here: http://pilegrimsleden.no/no/map/print

  • I have problems navigating on the maps – how do I define my stages?

You can define your stages by using the trip planner. Click here to go directly to the trip planner: http://pilegrimsleden.no/no/map/plan

  • How do I calculate the distances on the maps?

The best way to calculate distance on our maps is to use our trip planner.

Open up the trip planner in two windows. One for the actual pilgrimage/hike you are planning, and one to calculate the distance.
In the “calculation” window you calculate your distance by typing in the different stages you are planning in the START PLACE  and STOP DESTINATION. For example if you want to find out the distance between the accommodation Segard Hoel to Gumdal, you type in the geographic area name (Look in the map to find the right name). For Segard Hoel it is Fossmoan and for Gumdal it is Gumdalen. The trip planner will then calculate the approximate distance of 34 km.

Then you have to consider if the stage is too long or to short, and you do the same calculation for the rest of you pilgrimage.

  • How do I print the maps?

Printable maps can be found in the trip planner, or by clicking: http://pilegrimsleden.no/no/map/print

  • How is the terrain?

The terrain varies. You will walk alongside fields, on asphalt, up steep hills, through marsh and meadows – and over graveled paths. Depending on the weather the asphalt can be hot, or the meadows swampy and damp. Prepare yourself for a hike in varied terrain.

  • What footwear should I choose?

We recommend worn-in hiking shoes with good cushioning and steadiness. Some choose hiking boots, some choose goretex, some choose technical running shoes with breathing and some choose sandals. The choice of shoes is very individual. Please contact one of our Regional pilgrim centers for further advice: you'll find our contact info in the link.

  • Is the trail easy to find? – Is it well marked?

The trail should be easy to find and is marked with the pilgrim’s symbol. Nevertheless, we recommend a detailed, current map. You should also take a compass with you.

  • Is there a risk of snow in the mountains?

There may be snow in the mountains. If it is not recommended to pass Dovre we will let you know on our web page. You will find weather forecasts here:

    www.yr.no

    Especially for Dovrefjell:  http://www.yr.no/sted/Norge/Oppland/Dovre/Dovrefjell/

  • Is it possible to order transport of luggage?

Several hostels offer luggage transfer to the next overnight stop. Requests in advance. The Regional pilgrim centers may help you to order luggage transport by taxi or other public transport. In some places, the local pilgrim‘s community can help.

  • Which season is best for pilgrimages?

Various pilgrim paths can be walked through the whole year. Both beautiful spring-like stages, as well as autumn adventure tours can be experienced on the pilgrim trails. June, July and August are the best month for pilgrimage trips in respect to the maintenance and marking of the trails. The hostel’s high season is also in those summer month. If you are planning a longer hike, we recommend you to go in summertime.
